Sign updates in progress; City requests delay in executing address changes

Yesterday and today City staff have been updating street signs in the neighborhood as well as at the intersection of Fair Woods Parkway and Fairfax Boulevard.

The City shared this request to residents with updated street names:

Post Date: 01/03/2023

The names of 14 streets officially changed on Jan. 1, 2023, and the U.S. Postal Service has updated its database to reflect the new names.

However, the city requests residents and business owners to refrain from updating their address information until Feb. 1.

The U.S. Postal Service has updated its database to reflect the new names, and mail delivery will continue uninterrupted.

Other companies and agencies use the USPS database to verify and validate addresses. However, it can take up to three months for companies to pull the information and begin using the new street names.

Previous street names will remain valid in the USPS database for six months to a year to allow for timely transition.

The city is coordinating with the Virginia DMV for dates and times for city residents to update addresses on their drivers licenses and IDs. We will share that information when it is available.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Info: email, 703-385-7800
